Haiku is an ancient form of Japanese poetry and is considered the shortest poetry form in the world. Haiku are typically written in just three lines of verse (with a total of seventeen syllables) in 5-7-5 pattern. Haiku often references seasons and nature. Instead of using the standard 5-7-5 Haiku format, this particular contest encourages contemporary structures which deviate from the normal pattern.
